After seventeen years of teaching in Volusia County public schools I found myself in need of something to recharge my educator batteries. Having visited Botswana in 2004 and spending some time in a village with local children, an idea was born: I could renew my teacher's spirit and make a difference to children in need of an education by volunteering to teach in Africa. I began to research volunteer organizations. e My main requirement was that I wanted to do this on my own. Arriving with a throng of Americans and living with them was not going to give me the feeling of belonging and the relationship with the African people that I wanted to have. My research led me to WorldTeach, administered through the John F. Kennedy Center for International Development at Harvard University. After a group training I would be placed in a school by myself with my own living quarters. I was assured I would have a place of my own with electricity and water. Perfect! I went through the necessary paperwork and fees, and committed myself to a 10 week adventure teaching in Nambia, Africa!
